Methods that let every pepper show its character

Greenhouse seed starting

Every pepper at Bagshot Row begins life in the greenhouse, where temperature, humidity, and light are dialed in from day one. Starting seeds under controlled conditions produces stronger, more uniform transplants — seedlings that have already developed a robust root system and true leaves before they ever meet the Florida sun. Careful timing means each variety hits the field at exactly the right stage, setting the foundation for a confident, productive season.

Shade cloth

Florida summers are brutal — sustained heat above 95°F causes blossom drop, sun scald on fruit, and stressed plants that stop producing. Shade cloth solves all three. By filtering 30–50% of direct sunlight, it lowers ambient air temperature around the canopy, cools the soil surface to protect shallow feeder roots, and shields developing fruit from the bleaching and tissue damage that direct afternoon sun causes. The result is better fruit set, more vibrant color, and plants that keep producing through the hottest months instead of shutting down.

Fertigation

Fertigation is the practice of delivering water and dissolved nutrients to plants simultaneously through the same irrigation lines — feeding and watering in a single pass. In Florida's extreme heat, plants transpire rapidly and nutrient uptake windows are short; fertigation puts exactly what a plant needs directly at the root zone at the moment it can use it, eliminating the waste and inconsistency of broadcast fertilizing. This precision approach is closely related to hydroponic technique — the same principles of nutrient solution management, EC monitoring, and pH control that govern a hydroponic system apply here, adapted for soil and raised-bed growing.

Hydroponics

Select varieties at Bagshot Row are grown hydroponically, where roots live in a precisely managed nutrient solution rather than soil. Without the variability of ground conditions, every plant receives a consistent, measurable feed — EC and pH are monitored daily and adjusted in real time. Hydroponics allows us to push flavor development in varieties that respond to controlled stress, and to produce clean, consistent harvests year-round regardless of what the Florida weather is doing outside.
